From UAB Department of Genetics Join the UAB Department of Genetics faculty and staff in honoring Dr. S. Lane Rutledge through your support of the UAB Department of Genetics.
When S. Lane Rutledge M.D. passed away in January, her family, colleagues, friends, and patients mourned the loss of a beloved individual. She was a dedicated, hardworking, and deeply compassionate pediatric neurologist and geneticist.
Dr. Rutledge was a professor of clinical genetics at both UAB and Children′s of Alabama. She was medical director of the UAB Biochemical Genetics Laboratory and served as the director of clinical services for genetics. She also served as an advisor to the Alabama Department of Public Health. Dr. Rutledge was also the physician for Camp Winnataska, a place near and dear to her heart. She volunteered her time there every summer.
Dr. Rutledge had a positive impact on patients and their families for many years in the UAB Department of Genetics. As a clinical geneticist, she had an empathetic approach that proved critical in educating patients and their families about their individual disorder(s). She served in the UAB community for over 30 years, specializing in metabolic disorders. This made her a unique treasure to her colleagues and students, as well as to the public at large. Dr. Rutledge’s work in supporting the state of Alabama’s health care system was truly lifesaving. She also played a crucial role in educating, training, and supporting while being a part of the UAB Genetic Counseling Program.
Dr. Rutledge was committed to these excellent programs, and support of these programs must continue to ensure their ongoing success. Please join her family and UAB in honoring the legacy of such an outstanding clinical geneticist, faculty member, and friend by making a gift in Dr. Rutledge’s memory. The Rutledge family, in conjunction with the UAB Department of Genetics' chair, will designate gifts to support the programs that embody her life’s work in the UAB Department of Genetics.
Among the potential uses for these funds are support for trainees to present their research at national meetings, funds for families who can not afford the full cost of diagnostic molecular testing and social programs for the genetic counsellors. This fund is a fitting tribute to Dr. Rutledge, and it reflects her dedication to genetics and her passion for helping patients with genetic disorders. Please consider making your gift today.
